Your films with your husband are all about great passionate love affairs. Present was Oscar-winning costume designer Catherine Martin who has lavishly and intelligently festooned a room that offers its nightly dweller a chance to soak up all things Scott, Zelda and Gatsby. CM: Strictly speaking, of course, it’s my fantasy. Martin beat fellow Australian Michael Wilkinson, who worked on American Hustle, in the costume design category. Martin told the ABC ahead of the awards ceremony that the Oscar nominations for The Great Gatsby were a 'wonderful validation' for the team who worked on the film. And of course, the suite has many books, Fitzgerald’s own and some we used for inspiration for the film. She’s achieved that goal at 18 or 17 and a half.
DC: Are non-readers going to be bored in the suite? The previous record holder was costume designer Orry George Kelly, who won Oscars for An American In Paris (1951), Les Girls (1957) and Some Like It Hot (1959). What are some of the more wearable elements you’ve featured in the film? 'It's a very Australian thing to do,' she said.
CM: Because we are really coming out of the First World War, I think the 20’s are really made by this clash of man and machines. Now costume and production designer Catherine Martin turns her talents towards the roaring ’20s with her favourite collaborator, husband Baz Luhrman, for The Great Gatsby costumes.
